American HistoryLesson 104-19-2016 The Cold War The Cold War lasted 40 years. The President at the time was Harry S. Truman The countries involved were the United States and the Soviet Union. Theses countries never physically fought. The objective was to contain communism from spreading and to contain the level of nuclear arms from countries who would use it for power. There were seven presidents who where involved, and numerous leaders. What was the cold war The Cold war participants The Axis Powers The ALLIED powers The post-war turmoil The United States Soviet Union Britain Germany Japan Italy The United States USSR Started from decade of resentment of American refusal to treat USSR as an international community. After the war the Soviet Union began to expand into Eastern Europe. Huge concern that the Stalin would spread communism to other countries in the East. This threat seemed serious to the U.S. because it appeared the USSR would control the world. Post war soviet expansion Americans agreed that the best strategy to build defense against the Soviet Union was, containment. During the end of the war, President Harry S. Truman was in office. Truman stood before Congress, to initiate foreign policy, for the next four decades. Allowing other countries to have the choice of resisting pressures from outside forces.
